A suspected thief was shot dead on Tuesday morning after allegedly stealing household items and attempting to escape from Kahawa Barracks in Nairobi.
According to security officials, the suspect is believed to have acted alone and reportedly broke into a residential house within the military barracks. He allegedly made away with a 32-inch television set and two six-kilogram gas cylinders.
The suspect was said to be trying to flee the premises through a perimeter fence when military personnel responded to screams from the area. In the ensuing incident, the suspect was shot and fatally wounded.
Authorities said the body had bullet wounds to the forehead and the hip area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was later moved to a mortuary, where it is being held pending a postmortem examination.
Military officials noted that installations and residential areas within barracks are under tight security and guarded by armed personnel at all times. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
