Police have launched an intensive manhunt after a businessman was shot and injured during a daring robbery in Busia Town, near the Kenya–Uganda border.
The incident occurred at around 4:00 pm on December 31, 2025, at a hardware store located just a few metres from the busy Kenya–Uganda border crossing in Madua A village, Busia County.
According to police, the victim was confronted by two armed suspects riding a motorcycle. The assailants, who had concealed their faces, stormed the hardware shop and opened fire, shooting the businessman in the right ankle.
The attackers, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle, made away with Sh350,000 in cash before fleeing the scene. Police believe the suspects escaped towards Uganda immediately after the attack.
Officers who visited the scene recovered a spent 7.62mm cartridge, confirming the use of a high-calibre firearm during the robbery.
The injured businessman was rushed to hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition and is currently receiving treatment.
Security agencies have intensified patrols along the border and surrounding areas as investigations continue. Police say efforts are underway to track down the suspects, with cross-border cooperation expected to aid the pursuit.
Authorities have once again urged traders operating near border points to enhance security measures and report suspicious activity promptly, citing rising cases of armed robberies targeting businesses in the region.
