A tragic road accident claimed the life of a driver after his vehicle collided with an elephant crossing the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway in Kwale County.
The incident occurred on the night of December 31, 2025, at around 11:00 pm in the Mackinnon Road area, police have confirmed.
Speeding Vehicle Hits Elephant
According to police reports, the driver, Mohamed Farid Osman, aged 40, was driving a Subaru Forester from Mombasa towards Nairobi when he struck an elephant that was crossing the highway at Engwata area.
At the time of the accident, a herd of elephants was reportedly crossing the road, posing a serious hazard to motorists using the wildlife corridor.
Impact Sends Car Off the Road
The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to veer off the road and roll approximately 30 metres before coming to a stop. Osman sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
A female passenger who was travelling with him escaped the accident unharmed, police said.
Body Taken to Mortuary
Authorities later moved the body to a mortuary pending an autopsy and further procedures. Police are continuing investigations into the crash.
Authorities Urge Caution
The accident has renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution while driving through wildlife-prone sections of major highways, especially at night when visibility is poor.
The Mombasa–Nairobi Highway passes through several wildlife corridors, and collisions involving animals have remained a persistent safety concern in the region.
