Three recruits from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have died following a routine training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The incident occurred on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during a scheduled endurance exercise conducted as part of the recruits’ standard military training programme.

In a statement, the Kenya Defence Forces said the recruits developed medical complications while participating in the exercise. On-site medical personnel responded immediately, administering first aid before evacuating the affected recruits to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialised treatment.

Despite efforts by medical teams, the recruits were later pronounced dead.

KDF confirmed that the next of kin have been formally notified and assured the public that the military is offering support and assistance to the bereaved families.

The defence forces further announced that a comprehensive investigation has been launched in accordance with established military procedures to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The outcome of the probe will inform any necessary measures aimed at enhancing the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training.
