One person has been confirmed dead and 18 others injured after a matatu they were traveling in was involved in a serious road accident in Makueni County.

The crash occurred at Kikiini area along the Kikima–Machakos road, after the vehicle reportedly lost a front wheel while in motion.

Matatu Was Returning from Wedding

According to Benson Makumbi, the passengers had hired the matatu in Nairobi to attend a wedding ceremony in Kyuu and were heading back when the accident happened.

Makumbi noted that the vehicle, which has a capacity of 14 passengers, was carrying more than the allowed number at the time of the crash.

Victims Hospitalized at Mbooni

The injured passengers were rushed to Mbooni Hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was preserved at the facility’s mortuary.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether overloading and mechanical failure contributed to the tragedy.

Road Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, vehicle maintenance, and overloading in public transport vehicles across Kenya.

Officials are urging operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
