Police have arrested a 17-year-old Grade 9 student accused of hacking his classmate to death following an alleged dispute over learning materials at Akonjo Junior Secondary School in Uriri Sub-county, Migori County.
The suspect is alleged to have attacked and fatally injured his 17-year-old classmate on July 22, 2026, in an incident that has shocked the local community.
Kamgundho Location Chief Samuel Onjiko said he apprehended the suspect before handing him over to officers at Uriri Police Station, where he remains in custody awaiting arraignment on a murder charge.
According to the chief, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect attacked the victim with a panga as he was walking home from school on the evening of July 22.
Investigators believe the two students had disagreed earlier that morning over learning materials after the suspect accused the deceased of interfering with his locker.
Onjiko said police suspect the accused deliberately skipped afternoon classes after the lunch break to plan the attack before ambushing the victim later that evening as he made his way home.
The injured student was rushed to Migori Level Four Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
His body was transferred to the Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
