Acclaimed reggae and dancehall Dj Brownskin watched his wife poison herself in July last year, cheered her as he recorded the whole ordeal till she died as their kids watched in awe, a leaked video has shown.
Sharon Njeri Mwangi, who was Dj Brown Skin’s wife died by suicide on July 29 last year at their house in Roysambu, Nairobi.
Her death was made public by her husband in a Facebook post that attracted a lot of sympathy for the Dj who was left with two young children to take care of.
“Your passing left a gaping void in my life that I replace with the love we shared,” said the Dj whose government name is Michael Macharia at that time.
Now almost a year after Njeri’s death, a disgusting video that is bound to anger Kenyans has emerged showing her final moments alive on earth. The video which was purportedly recorded by the Dj shows the two having a conversation with his wife before she consumes an unknown substance.
She then throws the cup that she used to drink the substance toward the Dj before she sits down and starts to drool and have convulsions.
“Lovey bye. Tell my kids I love them. Sitakudanganya. I am done,” says Njeri.
“Mama! Papa! I am dying,” she then shouts to her kids who are in another room.
All this while, the Dj is seated does nothing but he keeps on recording. Then when things get worse, he summons the house help and tells her to bring milk for his wife.
“Mpe maziwa. Unajua amemeza madawa mingi. Mlazimishe,” he tells the maid then turns to the wife, “Ulisema unataka kufa.”
The video which has been leaked by blogger Edgar Obare this morning has attracted condemnation from Kenyans who cannot believe that someone can cheer someone as they commit suicide. Many Kenyans have called for the Dj to be arrested.
According to Section 280 of the penal code, “Any person who procures another to kill himself or counsels another to kill himself and thereby induces him to do so or aids another in killing himself is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.”
Globally, close to 800,000 people die of suicide every year with an estimated 78 percent of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Kenya ranks position 114 among the 175 countries with the highest suicide rates.
A task force on mental health established Kenya has a high burden of mental illness due to ill health, psychosocial disability, and premature mortality with huge gaps in access to care.
It is said that Brown Skin’s wife could not handle rejection by the Dj who is a serial dater.
