Following Azimio la Umoja’s withdrawal from the bipartisan talks due to irreconcilable differences, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance has intervened to prevent the potential collapse of the negotiations, just five days later.
The ruling coalition has put forward a series of proposals aimed at resuming the talks. In a letter addressed to the chairperson of the Azimio bipartisan talks, Otiende Amollo, Kenya Kwanza suggests that the committee should request the selection panel to temporarily suspend the process for a period of 21 to 30 days.
Regarding the demand from Azimio to preserve the IEBC’s Presidential Election Server, Kenya Kwanza argues that there is a legally established interim measure in place to safeguard the servers until August 15, 2025. To ensure compliance, George Murugara, the co-chairperson, is willing to collaborate on drafting a letter to the IEBC, reminding them of their legal obligation to preserve the Presidential Election Servers and their data for potential inspection.
With proposals put forth to address the key concerns raised by the opposition, the Chairperson of Kenya Kwanza has invited Otiende to a meeting on Monday at 2pm. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and draft the necessary letters, enabling the continuation of the talks.
Last week, Azimio had issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding a declaration of their commitment to implementing the interim concerns. Failure to meet this demand would result in the talks being considered collapsed, prompting the opposition to convene and determine the way forward.
