Two Kisumu County Assembly members face the possibility of losing their seats due to their prolonged absence from more than eight consecutive plenary sittings.
The Speaker of the County Assembly, Elisha Oraro, has officially contacted Habil Nyasuna, the MCA representing Masogo Nyangoma, and Kennedy Ajwang, the Nominated MCA, requesting them to provide valid reasons for their absence or face seat forfeiture.
In his letter, the Speaker pointed out that both MCAs had been consistently absent from Assembly sessions without providing the necessary written permissions as required.
According to Article 194 (1) 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, the MCAs have been given until June 1st to present their justifications, failing which their seats may be declared vacant.
Dated May 24, 2023, the Speaker’s letter urges the MCAs to provide a satisfactory explanation for their prolonged absence to avoid the potential loss of their seats.
Ordinary plenary sessions of the Kisumu County Assembly occur three times a week, specifically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, during which the assembly conducts its legislative business.
