The government has declared Wednesday 28 June as Eid al-Azha (Eid-ul-Azha) holiday.
This was announced on Monday by Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kisle Kindiki in the Official Gazette dated June 26, 2023.
“As general information to the public, in exercising the powers conferred by Section 2(2) and Part II of the Schedule under Section 3 of the Holidays Act, the Chief Cabinet Secretary on Wednesday: 28 June 2023 will be a public holiday in honor of Eid al-Azha,” the official gazette said.
Eid al-Adha represents the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city for Muslims. The Hajj is an obligatory religious duty for followers of this religion and must be performed at least once in a lifetime by every adult Muslim who is physically or financially able to undertake the journey.
The essence of Eid al-Adha is to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad and speak of Muslims’ devotion to God.
This day commemorates the prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son when commanded by God.
