The Anti Corruption court has frozen Sh643.2 million in unexplained wealth connected to a low-ranking City Hall employee who was on a Ksh55,000 salary but could not explain how he amassed his property.
The assets under scrutiny include valuable real estate, luxury apartments, high-end vehicles, substantial cash holdings, and even ownership stakes in a popular nightclub in Nairobi.
In 2022, Lady Justice Esther Maina granted an order to enable the EACC to complete its investigation into allegations that this employee, through their position, received bribes and kickbacks, leading to the accumulation of vast wealth and assets, including two high-end motor vehicles.
According to court records, despite earning a meagre net monthly salary of Ksh. 55,000, this employee directed Ksh. 506 million through bank accounts registered in their name and those of their family members between January 2016 and October 2022.
The investigation revealed that their responsibilities at the county included overseeing outdoor advertisements, monitoring and supervising all outdoor advertisements and contacting advertisers to ensure compliance with approval and payment requirements for advertisements.
The court documents state, “Although he earns a monthly net salary of Kshs. 55,000/-, investigations have revealed that between January 2016 and October 2022, he received and channeled monies suspected to have been received through corruption amounting to Kshs. 506,397,460.71/- through bank accounts in his name, the name of companies associated with him, his family members including his spouse and his minor children.”
