Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua issued a stern warning to Kericho Governor Erick Mutai and his deputy Fred Kirui, cautioning them to either collaborate effectively or risk impeachment as their ongoing dispute escalated.
Speaking at a funeral service in Masaita village, Londiani ward in Kericho, Gachagua emphasized the need for the two leaders to avoid publicly embarrassing the President with their constant feuds. He stressed that their public disagreements also hindered the delivery of essential services, necessitating government intervention.
The Deputy President urged Mutai and Kirui to work together to fulfill their manifesto and campaign promises for the betterment of the county. Gachagua highlighted that their persistent disagreements were a disservice to the constituents who had elected them into office.
He emphasized, “You must cooperate as you did during your campaign. If you continue to engage in disputes, the people may decide to remove you from office. I will convey to the people of Kericho that they made an unfortunate choice. We have a duty to serve the people of Kericho, and they cannot benefit when conflicts persist between the governor and his deputy,” Gachagua stated.
Furthermore, Gachagua playfully dared the two leaders to redirect their energy towards development efforts, addressing the issue of banditry in Pokot, or even consider joining the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for a peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
“The President recently convened a meeting in Nairobi, attended by 25 heads of state, who unanimously chose him as their representative. He enjoys respect both on the continent and globally. He is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly in New York and later participate in COP28 in Dubai, representing Africa,” he explained.
“However, in his hometown of Kericho, local leaders are engaged in conflict. I will not tolerate it. During the election, you campaigned together. Why engage in disputes now after securing your positions? Collaboration is essential,” he emphasized.
