Education stakeholders across Africa are exploring ways to harmonise education standards with the emerging demands of the labour market.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu emphasized the critical role that Africa plays in the evolution of labour markets and education systems, highlighting the necessity for responsive policies that promote lifelong learning and empower individuals to acquire the skills and qualifications required for success.

Machogu expressed that this approach would enable Africa to contribute significantly to a more inclusive future, characterized by a workforce that is agile, resilient, and well-prepared to face the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

He commended the commitment of various governments to develop effective frameworks that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, foster the skills revolution, promote social inclusion, and enhance employability across diverse segments of the population.

These remarks were delivered by Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical and Vocational Training (TVET), during the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) II Training Workshop hosted at a Nairobi hotel.

The workshop, held over three days, centered on the theme of ‘Making National Qualifications Frameworks Operational in a Changing World.’

Machogu expressed his satisfaction with the commencement of this groundbreaking training program, emphasizing its significance in light of the ongoing global changes in qualification frameworks.

He noted that a nation’s investment in policies aimed at enhancing the credibility and alignment of qualifications with emerging global trends is indicative of forward-thinking leadership.

The Cabinet Secretary highlighted the transformative nature of qualifications, significantly influenced by global megatrends like digitalization, automation, demographic shifts, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

These forces have reshaped the relationship between education systems and the labor market. In response, Machogu stressed the importance of adapting to the rapid pace of technological advancement, highlighting the need for flexible approaches that enable individuals to acquire credentials for lifelong learning.

Machogu also underscored the importance of bridging the gap between education and work, emphasizing the role of high-quality, trusted qualifications recognized at all levels.

Dr. Alice Kande, Acting Director General of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority, added to the conversation by emphasizing the complexity of the modern world and the need for continuous adaptation to technological advancements and economic shifts.

Dr. Kande emphasized the pivotal role played by qualification frameworks in shaping the quality and relevance of education within nations.

The Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF), she noted, serves as a beacon of educational enlightenment, offering structured pathways for learners, professionals, and institutions to keep pace with change. KNQF represents a structured journey of personal and professional development, guiding individuals toward their goals.

Dr. Kande urged African nations to develop their own National Qualifications Frameworks (NQFs) that emphasize their role in advancing education, fostering regional collaboration, and enhancing global competitiveness.

She highlighted the importance of dialogue, best practice exchange, and addressing challenges to establish transparent qualifications and mutual trust for lifelong learning in Africa.

Recognizing the increasing engagement with digitalization, Dr. Kande emphasized the significance of learning in all contexts, particularly as the world undergoes transformations in work, technology, and the economy.

Effective NQFs, she argued, are pivotal to achieving SDG-4 (inclusive and equitable quality education) and SDG-8 (decent work and economic growth), aligning with broader objectives related to the skills revolution, social inclusion, and improved employability.

The ACQF-II Training Workshop stands as a crucible for forging a path toward a more harmonized, transparent, and effective education system across Africa, with efforts poised to resonate for years to come.
