Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced on Sunday, October 08, that the government plans to dismiss 100 civil servants by Christmas, with a focus on chiefs who have been unable to control the sale and distribution of illicit alcohol.
Speaking during a church service in Nandi County, the Deputy President disclosed that approximately 10-15 of the 100 civil servants set to be terminated will be from Nandi County.
Gachague further expressed his intention to use this mass firing to set an example for non-performing civil servants across the country.
“I want to remove about 100 chiefs from their positions before Christmas as an example to others who are not fulfilling their duties,” Gachagua stated.
He further revealed that a list of names for the dismissals had already been discussed and agreed upon by himself, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, and Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
The final list is expected to be completed by December 12, after which the mass firings will begin.
Gachagua emphasized his concern for the welfare of the younger generation and mentioned that the sale of illicit alcohol in Nandi County had already seen a significant reduction. He urged the County Commissioner not to ease up on efforts until the problem was completely eradicated.
Addressing the County Commissioner, Gachagua said, “County Commissioner, can you convene a meeting with your chiefs and village elders to come to a consensus.”
The Deputy President also called upon National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) to seek assistance from the clergy in addressing this issue.
