Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, has challenged the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition Party to withdraw from bipartisan discussions instead of making “empty threats” towards an elected government.
Speaking at the burial of Peter Kiriba in Kieni, Nyeri County, Nyoro, who also chairs the parliamentary budget committee, expressed his opinion that these talks should come to a halt because the opposition was using them to revisit the outcome of last year’s election.
“Yesterday we saw the leader of the opposition in Kitengela purporting to give threats that they are going to walk out of the ongoing talks. We want to tell them that it is even a favor that we are engaging in those talks; the people of Kenya have no time for those talks. They want all the leaders to do their job,” Nyoro stated.
According to the MP, the Kenya Kwanza team is not obligated to discuss the audit of last year’s election since the Kenya Kwanza government was legitimately elected in the August 2022 election.
He called on the opposition to set aside calls for an election audit to provide President William Ruto’s administration with ample time to fulfill its campaign promises.
Nyoro’s remarks come in response to Azimio leaders’ statements about exiting the talks if their Kenya Kwanza counterparts do not meet their irreducible minimum requirement: reducing the cost of living.
The dialogue team, co-chaired by the National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, has already reached agreements on restructuring the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), creating the office of the leader of the opposition, and enshrining the position of the prime cabinet secretary in the constitution.
However, the team has not yet reached an agreement on the issue of an election audit, which was brought to the table by the opposition.
