The travel ban on Bobi Wine, which had been in effect for more than a decade in the United Kingdom, has been officially lifted, paving the way for his upcoming visit to the UK this November to initiate his diaspora mobilization tours.
ChimpReports recently disclosed that the leader of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP), Bobi Wine, would soon gain access to the United Kingdom.
The UK’s Home Office had previously excluded Bobi Wine due to controversial anti-gay lyrics he released in 2014. In these lyrics, Bobi had called on the public to “shoot all the battymen.”
This decision faced intense scrutiny from human rights activists, who pressed the Home Office to prevent Bobi from performing at the Troxy Arena in the UK. As a result, Bobi Wine remained barred from entering England.
Bobi Wine subsequently engaged with British diplomats, international lawyers, and activists to facilitate his travel to the UK. These discussions took place at Bobi’s residence in Magere, where he met with diplomats and activists from various parts of the world.
Benjamin Katana, the NUP’s legal chief, confirmed on Monday morning that “the travel ban on Bobi Wine has indeed been lifted.” He further stated that “he (Bobi) has also been issued a visa to travel to the UK.”
International lawyers argued that Bobi Wine had expressed remorse for his previous anti-gay lyrics and had spent years advocating for the rights of LGBTQ individuals. Therefore, they contended that he should be allowed to enter the UK.
