The national government has disbursed Sh 10 billion to the counties in an effort to mitigate floods that have wreaked havoc in the country, East Africa Community, ASAL and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Peninah Malonza has said.
Malonza disclosed that the funds were to be sent to the 39 counties that have been affected by the floods that have destroyed infrastructure, houses and even claimed lives of over 120 people.
“Following our Monday Cabinet Meeting, the national government will send Sh10 billion to the 39 affected counties in an effort to mitigate the impacts of floods.
The monies will be sent by today (Friday),” said Malonza at Mutyambua market where she had gone to condole with the families that lost their loved ones while crossing river Muuoni 10 days ago on Friday.
“The national and county governments should each play their part to alleviate the suffering of our people. If a boat or helicopter is required, we shall send accordingly,” reiterated the Cabinet Secretary.
Concerning a bridge, the CS assured the residents that she will convey their message to her Road’s counterpart Onesimus Murkomen on the need to ensure a bridge was constructed over river Muuoni.
“I have heard the cry of the people of Mbitini on the need to construct a bridge across River Muuoni to avert loss of lives especially during floods,” noted Malonza.
Consequently, she challenged parents to take care of their children while warning them against crossing flooded rivers as they risked prosecution.
“If you cross a river and you survive, the government will prosecute you. But if you die, then your family will be charged,” warned Malonza.
Seven people perished while crossing the flooded river Muuoni from Kavuthu to Mutyambua village 10 days ago.
During the event, the national government donated 600 and 320 bags of rice and beans respectively to be distributed to residents of Mutyambua.
Malonza said another consignment of food will be delivered next week to benefit individuals who were displaced from their homes by floods in the county.
On compensation, the cabinet secretary told the affected families that the government cannot compensate them since there’s no law enacted by Parliament to allow the government to do so.
However, she promised that the details of the families should be sent to her in a bid to see how the government can assist especially children who are in schools from the bereaved families.
Currently, Makueni County has 5 evacuation camps namely St. Patrick’s Kawese Primary, Kya Kituku, Kavanta nzou, Katulye and Nduulu Kiangi all holding a total of over 800 people.
On his part, James Mbaluka Chief Administrative Secretary of Health (CAS) called for concerted efforts for all leaders to work together in a bid to ensure the suffering of the people is alleviated.
He challenged the local Members of Parliament to ensure monies are allocated for the tarmacking of Emali-Ukia Road in the county.
“All resources are allocated at the national assembly; MPs should ensure monies are allocated for projects in the county. The work of MPs is to distribute resources in the country,” said Mbaluka.
Others present during the occasion included chairperson for Tana Athi Regina Ndambuki, Acting County Commissioner Moses Gicharu and the county security team among others.
