The contentious land dispute in Njiru, Nairobi, has taken an unexpected turn, with the Kirima family, the rightful owners of the land, extending an olive branch to squatters who have occupied the area for over a decade.

The Kirima family is offering to sell plots of land to squatters at significantly reduced rates. 40 by 80 plots are being sold for Sh3 million, while 30 by 60 plots are available for Sh2 million, both considerably lower than the current market value.

Additionally, the family is prioritizing the sale to squatters who have resided on the land for at least 12 years, demonstrating their commitment to providing a pathway to ownership for those who have established roots in the community.

This offer comes on the heels of a recent court victory for the Kirima family.

The Environment and Land Court dismissed claims by squatters seeking ownership through adverse possession, ruling that they had entered the land illegally and constructed buildings without the family’s consent.

This verdict strengthened the Kirima family’s legal position and paved the way for them to seek solutions outside the courtroom.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has played a crucial role in encouraging dialogue between the two parties.

He has assured residents that their properties are not under threat of demolition and urged both sides to engage in constructive negotiations.

Governor Sakaja’s involvement suggests that the Kirima family is open to flexible payment arrangements and potentially reaching mutually beneficial agreements with the squatters.

The Kirima family’s offer to sell plots to squatters at discounted rates marks a significant shift in the Njiru land dispute.

While uncertainty remains for some residents who may not meet the 12-year residency requirement, this development offers a glimmer of hope for a long-awaited resolution. If successful, this agreement could pave the way for a more stable and secure future for the Njiru community.
