A 19-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has accused an American national of rape following a Tinder date at a luxury apartment in Westlands, Nairobi.
The suspect, identified as King Nwachukwu, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul at the Kibera Law Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Nwachukwu was arrested after the student reported the alleged incident at Parklands Police Station.
According to the prosecution, the student met Nwachukwu on Tinder before the two agreed to meet at the GTC Residence in Westlands. Police allege that what began as a date later turned violent.
The prosecution told the court that Nwachukwu allegedly took the student’s belongings before dragging her into a bedroom, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted several times without her consent.
The student reportedly told investigators that the alleged ordeal continued after she declined further sexual activity. She further alleged that she was subjected to additional physical violations, forced to take a shower and made to ingest unidentified pills before being chased out of the apartment.
She subsequently reported the matter to Parklands Police Station, leading to investigations and Nwachukwu’s arrest.
According to the charge sheet, Nwachukwu faces a main charge of rape and an alternative charge of committing an indecent act with an adult.
The accused denied the allegations in court and will remain in custody as the case proceeds.
During Monday’s proceedings, Magistrate Abdul directed that the miscellaneous application be closed after hearing the application.
“Having been the court which has heard the miscellaneous application in this case, I will therefore give directions that the miscellaneous file be closed. This matter will come up on the 31st of August before another court,” Abdul said.
The court directed that Nwachukwu’s formal bond application be heard on August 31, 2026, when a pre-bail report is also expected to be presented.
He will remain in custody until then.
The student has also appealed to other women who may have had similar encounters with the accused to come forward and assist police with investigations.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
