Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was crowned African Footballer of the Year at a ceremony in Marrakech on Monday,beating out Mohamed Salah and others for the prestigious award.
His compatriot Asisat Oshoala made history by winning the women’s African Footballer of the Year title for a record-breaking sixth time.
The 24-year-old Osimhen played a pivotal role in Napoli’s unexpected Serie A triumph last season, leading the league with 26 goals. This remarkable performance propelled him past Salah and Achraf Hakimi to claim the coveted prize,becoming the first Nigerian recipient since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
“It is a dream come true,” Osimhen expressed in his acceptance speech, acknowledging the support he received throughout his journey.
Following their thrilling run to the World Cup semifinals in Qatar, Morocco was recognized as the National Team of the Year in the men’s category. Their head coach, Walid Regragui, was further lauded by being named Coach of the Year.
Despite battling injuries, Oshoala, the Barcelona forward, secured her sixth African Footballer of the Year award. She led her team to the World Cup round of 16 in Australia and New Zealand, forcing England to a nail-biting penalty shootout.
Nigeria claimed the top spot for Women’s National Team of the Year, while South Africa’s Desiree Ellis cemented her legacy by winning Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year.
The CAF Awards ceremony honored the outstanding achievements of African footballers across various categories.
The recognition bestowed upon Osimhen, Oshoala, and other deserving individuals adds another chapter to the rich history of African football, highlighting the continent’s immense talent and potential on the global stage.
