Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has called for the arrest and prosecution of Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over their alleged involvement in the violence witnessed during the August 16 Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay.
Speaking during a press conference at Parliament, Kaluma urged security and investigative agencies to arrest the four leaders and investigate what he described as their alleged role in planning and financing the violence.
Kaluma Claims Opposition Faction Received KSh100 Million
The Homa Bay Town MP also called for investigations into the alleged financing of the Linda Mwananchi political caucus.
Kaluma claimed that the opposition faction received KSh100 million shortly before the rally and called on relevant authorities to establish the source and intended use of the funds.
“The Ksh100 million was delivered to Governor Orengo on the night of August 14, two days before the rally. This matter must be investigated by the relevant authorities,” Kaluma said.
The allegations come days after the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay descended into violence, leaving two people dead and scores injured, while property was also reportedly damaged during clashes surrounding the political gathering.
Babu Owino Accuses Goons of Attacking Opposition Supporters
On the opposition side, Babu Owino alleged that members of the Linda Mwananchi group were attacked by goons during the rally but managed to escape.
The Embakasi East MP also questioned the political tensions that followed the violence, alleging that President William Ruto had visited Migori without a similar incident occurring.
Babu warned against what he described as attempts to exploit political differences to create hostility between Luos and Kikuyus.
“Kenyans have continued voting for leaders who keep failing to bring the change they promised, while political divisions continue to dominate our politics,” Babu said.
ODM Condemns Homa Bay Violence
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has meanwhile condemned the violence, maintaining that political gatherings should not become platforms for intimidation, disruption or attacks on citizens.
The party said political differences should be addressed through peaceful democratic engagement and urged all political actors to respect the rights and safety of citizens.
Kaluma’s allegations against the four opposition leaders have not been proven, and it remains for investigative agencies to establish whether any of them were involved in planning, financing or facilitating the violence.
