Kenya has made a significant discovery of coltan, a rare and valuable mineral crucial in the production of cell phones, laptops, and various communication devices.

Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced the presence of coltan deposits in six counties, including Embu.

On January 24, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted that the administration under President William Ruto has initiated the assessment of the mineral’s value.

Mvurya emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the vibrancy of the mining industry for the nation’s benefit.

“It is now official. We have coltan deposits in the country, and we want to see how we can inspire investors,” stated the CS. The government aims to employ more workers to contribute to the exploration of these valuable minerals scattered across different counties.

Coltan is a critical and strategic mineral used in the manufacturing of various technological devices such as phones, cameras, electronics, semiconductors, and computers. This discovery positions Kenya as an emerging player in the global mining sector, offering potential for increased manufacturing of affordable and market-friendly phones and electronic gadgets. Moreover, it is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on imported electronic devices.
