The government has implemented an increase in toll charges for the Nairobi Expressway in a bid to boost revenue collection.
As per a special Gazette Notice authorized by Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, drivers traveling from Mlolongo to Westlands will now be required to pay Ksh500, a hike from the previous Ksh360 fee.
Moja Expressway also confirmed that these adjusted toll charges will come into effect from January 1, 2024.
The operator detailed the rates, specifying that for Manual Toll Collection (MTC) from Mlolongo to Westlands, the fee will be Ksh500. However, those opting for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) will pay slightly less at Ksh490.
The increase marks a notable increase from the former minimum toll of Ksh120, with the highest fee rising to Ksh500 from the prior Ksh360, reflecting a 38% escalation.
These revised rates pertain to saloon cars, while light vehicles with two axles and a high bonnet will be charged 1.5 times the new toll. Similarly, heavy vehicles with fewer than four axles will pay four times the adjusted rates, while those with four or more axles will face a charge of five times the amount.
The notice clarifies that the adjustments are based on the prevailing exchange rate and changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Additionally, the Gazette Notice specifies altered toll rates for specific sections of the Nairobi Expressway. For instance, commuters traveling from the Nairobi East (Mlolongo) segment to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will now be charged Ksh250 instead of the previous Ksh180.
Similarly, motorists journeying from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Eastern Bypass will face a toll of Ksh170, up from the earlier Ksh120.
