On Thursday, a Jetways cargo plane, contracted by the United Nations (UN), tragically crashed during landing on an airstrip in El-Barde, located in Somalia’s South West State. The incident resulted in the loss of one person’s life, and two others sustained injuries.
Jetways Airlines Limited is a registered airline company based at Wilson Airport, Nairobi.
The aircraft, assigned to transport humanitarian supplies for the World Food Programme (WFP), veered off the runway during the landing.
In response to the unfortunate event, the UN released a statement expressing condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased individual and conveying wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.
The UN further emphasized its commitment to collaborating with the contracted airline, the federal government, and authorities in South West State to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another aviation mishap in the region. Just a week prior, a UN helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in an area under the control of the militant group Al Shabaab, situated in Central Galmudug State.
