Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, is grappling with the loss of his Facebook page to hackers. The page, boasting over 500,000 followers, appears to have slipped out of the legislator’s control shortly after he shared a New Year’s message with his audience, approximately 24 hours ago.
Acknowledging the cyber attack, Nyoro took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to inform his followers about the situation. He reassured them that his team was actively working to resolve the issue. In a tweet, he stated, “My Facebook page was hacked yesterday. We are trying to resolve the problem…We are African and Africa is our Business…”
The Chair of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee last posted on the compromised page on Monday morning, conveying New Year wishes to Kenyans. His message read, “Wishing you all a prosperous New Year, 2024. Nawatakia baraka tele mwaka mpya. We are African and Africa is our Business.”
In response to the incident, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino claimed that the hackers were attempting to extort money from him by posing as Ndindi Nyoro. “Hon Ndindi Nyoro’s Facebook account has been hacked, and hackers are inboxing me to send them money,” he wrote on X.
Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi advised Kenyans to disregard the updates and inbox messages being circulated by the hackers. “Please take note that hackers have taken control of the FB profile of Ndindi Nyoro and the official page. We are working to recover and restore the pages,” he assured.
The compromised page, with a following of 563,000, is currently sharing explicit material on the ‘Facebook Stories’ tab. An explicit video has been featured on the ‘Stories’ section for the past two hours.
