President William Ruto has named Professor Patrick Verkooijen as the new Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
Prof Verkooijen is set to serve in this role for the next five years, taking over from Professor Amukowa Anangwe, who had been serving as the Acting Chancellor.
Prior to his appointment as Chancellor, Professor Verkooijen held the position of Distinguished Chair at The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi.
Professor Verkooijen possesses a PhD from Wageningen University, an MPA from Harvard, a Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam, and an environmental engineering degree from the University of Utrecht Applied Sciences.
In 2022, the University of Nairobi bestowed upon Prof. Verkooijen an honorary doctorate in acknowledgment of his advocacy for climate resilience in Africa.
Furthermore, he received the Green Deal Prize during the 2022 Financial Afrik Awards, adding another accolade to his distinguished career.
