The defending champions, Senegal, secured their spot in the last 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-1 victory over Cameroon in Group C.
Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring for Senegal in the 16th minute, giving them a crucial lead.
Midway through the second half, Habib Diallo extended the lead, making it 2-0 for the reigning champions.
Cameroon fought back when Jean-Charles Castelletto headed in a goal with seven minutes remaining, setting the stage for a tense finish.
However, George-Kevin Nkoudou’s missed free header to equalize proved costly for Cameroon as Senegal held on for the win.
In stoppage time, Sadio Mane sealed the win for Senegal, securing their passage to the last 16. It was his first goal in this tournament.
Sadio Mane is the team’s fifth different goal scorer at the tournament in just two games. After scoring, Mane ran straight to hug former Senegal captain Cheikhou Kouyate who recently lost his father in Dakar and had to leave the camp.
Meanwhile, Cameroon, five-time continental champions, find themselves with one point after two games and are likely to need a victory in their final group match against The Gambia on Tuesday inorder to advance to the knockout stages.
It was also a disappointing outing for Manchester United goalkeeper Andrew Onana who joined the team late.
