Two miners have died after soil collapsed on three adults who were engaged in artisanal gold mining along Naser Stream, near the border of Transmara West, Transmara South and Kuria East.
The incident occurred on September 24, 2026, at around 1:40 p.m., according to police and witnesses.
The three miners were reportedly working alongside a dried-up stream while searching for gold deposits when the soil suddenly collapsed, burying them.
Members of the public rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation.
One of the victims, identified as Irakuzi Imenshi, a female adult from Burundi, died at the scene.
The other two victims were rushed to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, Marwa Sereka, a Kenyan man from Kuria, later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The third victim, a male adult from Burundi, survived the collapse and was receiving medical attention.
Police officers visited the scene after the incident was reported to Gem Police Post and supervised the response.
The mining site was subsequently cleared following the rescue operation as authorities continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal collapse.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by people engaging in artisanal mining, particularly in areas where excavation is carried out without adequate safety measures.
