The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) successfully captured a hyena in Juja, Kiambu County. The sub-adult hyena, estimated to be around 4 years old, was seized at Kiminicha Farm in Juja. KWS announced in a statement on December 31 that they employed predator animals to accomplish the capture.
This marks the second hyena captured within a week as part of the ongoing KWS operation, named Ondoa Fisi, in Juja Sub County. The operation, aimed at eliminating the hyena threat in the area, has utilized four predator traps thus far.
The need for the Ondoa Fisi operation arose from complaints by local residents about wild animals causing distress in the vicinity. KWS responded by deploying three mobile teams in the Juja area to bolster security and safety measures.
Early December, angry residents of Nyacaba village in Juja sub-county had blocked a section of Thika road and stopped police officers from collecting the body of a middle-aged woman who was mauled to death by suspected hyenas.
It is believed that the woman was walking from Nyacaba village to Ndarugu coffee plantation when she was attacked by the hyenas.
The angry residents demanded that the police hunt down the hyenas before collecting the body of the deceased.
KWS has assured the public of their commitment to completely resolving the issue and removing the animals from human settlements. They also stated their intentions to translocate the captured hyena to a national park, a location distant from inhabited areas.
