Raila Odinga has expressed confidence in securing the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position. Speaking to a crowd after opening the Marani market in Kisii, Raila stated that he has garnered endorsements from seven presidents across the East African region and beyond.
“I met with Ruto and Museveni. I went to get Museveni’s vote, then I met Ruto. They agreed that they will vote for me. Museveni said he will propose my name,” Raila revealed during his recent visit to Uganda. In an effort to garner support from East African Heads of State, Raila announced his upcoming meeting with Rwanda’s Paul Kagame in Kigali.
“Next week, I will meet Kagame. Mama Suluhu has pledged her support, Salva Kiir has accepted. The other day I was with Ramaphosa, he expressed his support, Tshisekedi has also affirmed his support,” he added.
Raila assured Kisii residents that he is prepared to compete with other candidates who express interest in the position, and if he is defeated, he will accept the outcome gracefully. Kisii Governor Simba Arati voiced his support for Raila’s bid, emphasizing its potential to advance the continent’s development, economic, and infrastructural growth.
“Baba, we stand behind you and urge everyone to support your bid with an open heart, not out of fear but out of genuine conviction. Let everyone rally behind your bid, and we will all rejoice,” said Governor Arati.
On Wednesday, Odinga dismissed concerns that assuming the AU job would impede his active involvement in Kenya’s politics.
