Eight pupils from Kanaani Integrated Primary and Junior School in Athi River, Machakos, have been hospitalized after consuming poisonous wild fruits.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during lunchtime when Grade 2 pupils picked fruits from an unknown tree behind their classroom.
The school’s head teacher, David Sangare, reported the suspected poisoning incident to the Athi River police station.
Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi confirmed the incident, stating that the affected children complained of stomachaches and vomiting immediately after consuming the fruits.
A team of police officers, led by the Athi River OCS, responded to the scene and confirmed that the children had been affected. They were then rushed to Athi River Level 4 Hospital for medical treatment.
Machakos Health executive Daniel Yumbya, together with local leaders and officials, visited the hospital to assess the situation. Yumbya explained that 51 pupils from the school were admitted to the hospital, with 22 in serious condition and 37 experiencing milder symptoms.
The hospital mobilized 27 doctors and nurses to attend to the patients, administering intravenous injections and oral medications.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti ordered a waiver on all medical bills for the affected children, ensuring they received treatment free of charge.
MCA Jeremiah Kaloi praised the prompt response of the police and county government, acknowledging their efforts in saving the victims’ lives. He reassured parents that their children were out of danger and commended the school’s head teacher for effective communication during the incident.
