The owner of the premises in Embakasi, where a tragic gas explosion claimed the lives of more than ten individuals and left over 300 injured in February, has been granted bail of 500,000 shillings in cash.
Derrick Kimathi, proprietor of Maxxis Energy Nairobi Limited, was released by Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego on a cash bail of 500,000 shillings, with an alternative bond set at Ksh.2 million.
The prosecution had sought additional time to conclude its investigations, but the court declined their request.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is pursuing several charges against Kimathi, including murder under sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code, as well as conspiracy to commit a felony.
Other charges being considered include negligent acts causing harm under Section 244 of the Penal Code and abuse of office under Section 46, in conjunction with Section 48 (91) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act of 2003.
