Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga as a strong contender for succeeding Chairman Moussa Faki at the top position of the African Union Commission.
Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Obasanjo encouraged East African Community (EAC) countries to throw their support behind Odinga.
“I have no doubt that my friend standing next to me (Odinga) is the right person to assume the mantle. If the EAC region supports him, I believe the rest of the continent will rally behind him,” stated Obasanjo.
“People who have previously held positions as heads of government, either as President or Prime Minister, are most suited for this role. When analyzed closely, it is East Africa’s turn.”
Odinga expressed his readiness for the top position at the African Union (AU) after extensive consultations. He emphasized his commitment to serving Africa and called for collaborative efforts to advance the continent.
“If we pool our resources as a continent and move in a unified direction, we can make Africa greater. I have been consulting widely, and I believe I am ready to serve the continent of Africa. Africa deserves better,” he declared.
