Nyeri Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria has criticized the government for disregarding the struggles of Kenyans amidst the heavy tax burden, which has resulted in a high cost of living.
Speaking at Kiriti Catholic Church in Nyeri on Sunday during the launch of the 2024 Lenten campaign for the archdiocese, themed ‘Integrity for a just nation,’ Muheria urged Kenyans to pray for a change of heart within the nation’s leadership and for them to heed dissenting voices.
The archbishop accused the government of neglecting crucial areas of concern for Kenyans and implementing punitive measures without adequate dialogue.
Muheria expressed concern over the unbearable cost of living, emphasizing the need for the government to listen to the grievances of the people.
He called for meaningful conversations on taxation and the housing levy, highlighting that while these initiatives may pass through parliament, they may not necessarily be in the best interest of the people. Muheria stressed that the primary needs of the people revolve around food and survival, which must be addressed.
“Our people do not necessarily need houses, they need food and survival, can we address that?” questioned Muheria.
However, Muheria clarified that the clergy is not against the government or its projects but underscores the necessity for a national dialogue on issues affecting Kenyans.
