Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued a directive for the removal of all wine and spirits outlets operating at bus termini within the city.

The directive came during a meeting convened by the County Chief, which brought together stakeholders from the transport sector, including the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

“We will no longer allow disorder in the city,” Governor Sakaja warned sternly during the meeting. “Nairobi is the capital city, and we are working tirelessly to ensure orderliness. That is why today, I have directed the removal of all wines and spirits shops located around matatu terminals.”

Governor Sakaja emphasized that the unregulated proliferation of such establishments in the city had led to numerous negative consequences, including loss of lives.

“The opening of these joints near matatu terminals has compromised many lives, some even resulting in fatalities,” he stated. “Drivers and touts are spending significant time in these wine and spirits outlets, which have effectively transformed into bars and drinking dens. This has contributed to reckless behavior on our roads, leading to accidents caused by alcohol and drug abuse.”

The Governor’s directive underscores the urgent need to address the issue of alcohol consumption and its impact on road safety within the city, with a focus on restoring order and prioritizing public safety.
