The bail applications of three police officers accused of torturing a detainee at Homa Bay Police Station were rejected by the Migori High Court on Thursday.
The officers, namely Peter Langat, Peter Nyakundi, and Gilbert Aloka, stationed in Nakuru and Homa Bay counties, are charged with deliberately and unlawfully restraining Edward Ondiek Amayo.
The alleged incident occurred on May 24, 2022, when the officers reportedly suspended Amayo’s body between two tables, used canes on him, and inflicted harm to his genitals using pliers.
During their appearance before Senior Principal Magistrate Naomi Wairimu on Wednesday, all three officers denied the charges. Despite their pleas for bond being denied by the State counsel, the court scheduled the hearing for February 9, 2024, to address bond terms.
The State prosecutor raised concerns about witness interference and the suspects allegedly communicating with colleagues who are part of the witnesses. The prosecution has identified 13 witnesses, including Amayo and six law enforcement officers, to testify in the case.
