National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi has called for a halt to the implementation of the Presidential Working Party on Education report until it receives approval from Parliament
Expressing concern, Wandayi noted that despite the report not having passed through the National Assembly, there are indications that its recommendations are already being put into action.
Insisting on parliamentary scrutiny, Wandayi emphasized the necessity for the report to undergo thorough examination by both houses of Parliament before any decisions are made regarding its implementation.
Addressing constituents at Ugunja Technical and Vocational College in his Ugunja constituency, Wandayi highlighted that certain recommendations outlined in the education taskforce’s report may necessitate constitutional amendments. He stressed that such amendments require approval from Parliament and cannot be pursued through alternative means.
In particular, Wandayi voiced opposition to proposals suggesting the national government take over the management of early childhood development education (ECDE), asserting that such measures constitute an attempt to circumvent the constitutional process.
Additionally, the Ugunja MP cautioned against the escalating trend of school disruptions and assaults on teachers in response to poor academic performance. He urged locals to utilize proper channels for addressing grievances rather than resorting to disruptive actions.
Wandayi advised that performance-related issues be resolved amicably through established channels, urging the community to refrain from taking matters into their own hands.
