Wayne Rooney says he is aiming for a quick return to management in order to help fulfil his dream of taking charge of Manchester United or Everton.
The ex-United and Everton striker was sacked by Championship side Birmingham in January after 83 days in charge.
Rooney previously had spells in charge of Derby County and MLS side DC United.
“Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to,” the ex-England captain said on Match of the Day.
“But it’s a process,” added Rooney, 38. “I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track.”
Speaking while he was working as a pundit on United’s FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, he said: “I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I’m hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs.”
Rooney was appointed as Birmingham boss on 11 October. The appointment followed a controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace with Blues sixth in the Championship.
Under the former forward, they lost nine of 15 games and dropped to 20th in the table.
Rooney was sacked after a 3-0 loss at Leeds United on 2 January.
“I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham. But I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it,” he said.
“You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. However, it’s about how you bounce back.
“I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”
