The Auditor General, Nancy Gathungu, has raised the alarm regarding the misappropriation of taxpayers’ funds in the construction of four stadiums as well as lack of value for money due to shoddy work.

According to a report from Gathungu’s office, the misappropriation included instances of inflated expenditure.

For instance, Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, originally budgeted at Ksh. 696 million, saw its cost increase by Ksh. 76.5 million, equivalent of 11% above original cost.

Similarly, Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County also had inflated expenditure with the total cost increasing by Ksh. 148 million, which was not supported by approval documents. Additionally, phase 2 of the project stalled due to non-payment of the contractor.

In Kisumu, the Jomo Kenyatta Showground upgrade, costing Ksh. 350 million, also raised concerns about value for money. A close inspection of the facility shows that there are missing metal covers and there is massive vandalism.

In Nairobi County, taxpayers lost Ksh. 57 million in the construction of Jamhuri Posta grounds, with accusations of direct procurement contrary to the law. The project was incomplete, lacking electricity and floodlights.
