The secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) regional bloc has refuted claims circulating on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), alleging the launch of a common regional currency by member countries.
The false post, originating from a fraudulent X account named “Government of East Africa,” falsely asserted the introduction of a unified currency for the EAC member states.
In response, the EAC Secretariat swiftly issued a statement clarifying the misinformation. “The Partner States’ journey towards a single currency remains ongoing. Any reports suggesting the unveiling of new banknotes for the region are inaccurate and should be disregarded,” emphasized the Secretariat.
The misleading post purported that the currency would be named the East African Sheafra, purportedly a blend of the shilling of East Africa and Franc. Accompanying the post was an image of a counterfeit banknote representing the alleged single currency.
Despite garnering significant attention, with over half a million views and endorsements from several prominent media outlets and online personalities in the region, the EAC Secretariat has emphasized the necessity of dismissing such misleading information.
