Lawrence Gitonga, the 33-year-old man who had been in the company of 19-year-old Joan Mbula Nzomo before her untimely demise, has claimed that she assaulted him with a knife forcing him to flee and lock himself in the bathroom where he passed out.
Ms Nzomo later fell off the 10th-floor apartment to her death.
Police are still trying to piece together details of the night, and whether she was thrown off, or jumped to her death.
Gitonga was discovered unconscious in the bathroom, bearing eight stab wounds, shortly after Joan’s body was found on Saturday morning.
His injuries included one stab wound to the back and seven to the chest, prompting police to utilize spare keys to gain entry to the premises.
According to Gitonga, he had barricaded himself in the bathroom due to profuse bleeding, fearing for his life from the wounds allegedly inflicted by Mbula.
During police questioning, Gitonga exhibited no awareness of Mbula’s demise and even inquired about her whereabouts.
He recounted to the authorities that he vaguely recalled engaging in physical altercation with Mbula, resulting in her purportedly stabbing him with a knife. Subsequently, upon realizing the severity of his injuries, he sought refuge in the bathroom, where he lost consciousness.
Gitonga’s account positions him as the primary suspect in Mbula’s death, as she was a student at Nairobi Aviation College.
Presently, he is undergoing recovery at Kenyatta National Hospital under police supervision.
Authorities are actively investigating whether Gitonga was under the influence of drugs, considering his disoriented state upon discovery in the blood-stained bathroom. They await the results of a blood test to ascertain his potential drug consumption.
