The national government has decided to acquire 4,000 acres of the Chakama Ranch, where the tragic Shakahola deaths occurred, to establish a memorial site.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki made this announcement on Wednesday, March 27, stating that the memorial area will be dedicated to burying bodies that remain unidentified by their families.
Speaking in Kilifi, Kindiki explained that the memorial will serve as a solemn reminder of the atrocities that occurred.
“As a government, we will take possession of the 4,000 acres where the main suspect conducted his activities. We will fence off this area as the judicial process is ongoing, and courts may need to visit the crime scene. The remaining over 50,000 acres of the Chakama ranch were degazetted last week,” Kindiki stated.
He further disclosed that the remaining land, previously designated as a crime scene, has been degazetted, leaving only the 4,000 acres as the area under investigation.
