Authorities are investigating the death of a grade eight pupil who allegedly fell from the rooftop of their school in Nairobi’s Umoja area.
According to police reports, the boy’s body was found on the first floor of the building after the incident occurred. Surveillance footage has been secured by the police to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The school, housed in a seven-story building, witnessed the tragedy on Friday, March 8. Police have initiated a murder inquiry as the injuries sustained by the boy appear inconsistent with those typically associated with a fall. Further details are anticipated following a postmortem examination.
In response to the incident, four individuals, including two directors, the head teacher, and a teacher responsible for the boarding section, were apprehended for questioning on Friday night. Buruburu sub-county police commander Francis Kamau confirmed ongoing investigations, citing various inconsistencies.
An internal investigation is also underway at the school, particularly as it was reported that the deceased pupil had been interrogated by a teacher earlier in the day. The precise sequence of events leading to the boy’s fall, which occurred around 7:30 pm, remains unclear.
Operating as a boarding institution with numerous pupils, the school community is reeling from the tragedy. Police have taken custody of the child’s remains for autopsy, as requested by the grieving parents.
Demanding justice, parents have rallied support, with some visiting the school to ensure the safety of their children. The incident has sparked concerns and calls for accountability within the school community.
