Tensions flared in a Samburu County village on Friday evening following a violent attack by gunmen suspected to be bandits, resulting in the deaths of two people.
The victims, a 40-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, were fatally shot during what appeared to be a failed raid. Police revealed that the bodies were discovered in the Sere Olipi area several hours after the ambush, with the assailants fleeing the scene.
This incident adds to a series of violent episodes in the region, prompting outcry and demonstrations from local residents who demand immediate action to address the escalating violence.
Community members alerted the authorities upon finding the bodies by the roadside. A police team responded, recovering the victims’ bodies. The woman sustained bullet wounds to the abdomen, while the man had injuries on the chest, hip, and leg.
Amid fears of further attacks or retaliatory violence, the bodies were transported to the mortuary.
The incident occurred shortly after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki visited the area to bolster ongoing efforts to combat banditry and protect locals from attacks on their livestock and lives.
Samburu West MP Naisula Lessuda lamented the dire situation, noting that at least 74 people, including an elected Member of the County Assembly, have been killed in recent months due to banditry. She highlighted the closure of schools due to insecurity and the displacement of over 2,500 individuals, adversely affecting development in the region.
Fellow MP Letipita Eli of Samburu North echoed these concerns, emphasizing the suffering of displaced victims and the prevailing atmosphere of fear.
MPs from banditry-prone areas in the Rift Valley region criticized the government’s approach to tackling the issue, citing outdated strategies and a lack of consultation with local leaders. They denounced the intimidation tactics, such as summoning elected officials for questioning, and advocated for a more inclusive and effective approach.
CS Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to combating banditry, acknowledging its devastating impact on communities’ livelihoods and security. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to dismantle the criminal networks behind cattle rustling and ensure the recovery of stolen livestock.
