Thousands of youth have been left jobless after Remotasks, an online platform offering various tasks like copywriting, media labeling, and AI model training ceased operations in Kenya due to fraud.
The platform had gained popularity among young Kenyans seeking remote job opportunities and those looking for additional income through part-time gigs.
Users were compensated in US dollars via online payment channels such as PayPal on a weekly basis.
Since Tuesday however, it has been impossible to log in to the Remotasks website from Kenya or access any work opportunities as all Kenyan IP accounts have been blocked.
Some Remotasks users in Kenya have taken to social media to express their frustration after they received emails notifying them of the platform’s discontinuation in the country.
The email stated: “We are reaching out with an important announcement regarding Remotasks operations in your location. We are discontinuing operations in your current location effective March 8, 2024. As part of this change, you have been off-boarded from your current project. You will receive payments associated with your work completed via the payment account set up on your profile.”
