Convicted murderer Joseph Irungu, popularly known as Jowie, has filed a notice of appeal against a High Court ruling that sentenced him to death for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
A notice filed at the Court of Appeal states, “Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu, alias Jowie, appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9th day of February 2024, and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024, whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March 2024.”
The notice further specifies that the appeal is against both the conviction and the sentence.
Jowie, represented by his advocate Andrew Muge, expressed his intention to be present during the appeal hearing. He was found guilty of the brutal murder of Monica at her Lamuria Gardens apartment, leading to his conviction and subsequent death sentence.
In delivering the maximum penalty for murder, Justice Nzioka stated that the punishment aligns with the severity of the crime, which resulted in the loss of Monica’s life at the age of 29.
The judge emphasized that her decision was based on the weight of the evidence presented during the trial, as well as Jowie’s character.
