Matatu operators in Nairobi are expressing frustration and threatening strike action due to feeling excluded from the city’s upgrade program.
The operators argue that recent tarmacking efforts at various terminuses have significantly disrupted their services. While the specific strike dates have yet to be confirmed, residents are advised to brace for potential disruptions.
Operators emphasize that the city walkway renovations occurred without prior notice, making it impossible for them to relocate to alternative terminuses. They accuse the county government of acting with impunity and violating constitutional requirements.
Critical roads such as Tom Mboya Street, Rover Road, Latema Road, and Accra Road are undergoing renovation as part of the project, which matatu owners argue directly impacts their operations.
They demand an immediate halt to the renovations, citing the creation of flower beds and road barricades that interfere with their business activities.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja previously announced an Ksh8.7 billion agreement with the US government for infrastructural projects, including city walkway construction. The county government is set to partner with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for this initiative.
