Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson on Saturday officially reopened Uhuru Park to the public following a comprehensive two-year renovation effort.
The park, alongside Central Park, underwent closure in 2022 to facilitate extensive renovations spearheaded by the now-defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
Addressing attendees during the Mass Registration For Private Security Guard Force Numbers, Sakaja emphasized that the Kenya Defence Forces had officially handed over the park to City Hall, signifying its readiness for public enjoyment.
“This occasion marks the official reopening of this ground to the public and various events. The Kenya Defence Forces have concluded their work, and this facility now belongs to the people of Nairobi,” declared the City Governor.
The revitalized park now showcases iconic structures, including monuments paying tribute to Mau Mau freedom fighters, the Pope, and themes of peace, love, and unity. Additionally, a dedicated Freedom Corner has been established in honor of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, enriching the park’s historical significance.
Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) has introduced innovative features within the park, such as ice cream parlors crafted from repurposed buses and antique materials, enhancing both aesthetics and recreational opportunities for visitors.
A notable addition to the revamped Uhuru Park is a creatively transformed old aircraft into a modern, upscale hotel, adding a distinctive charm to the park’s ambiance.
Furthermore, the park has been enhanced with contemporary garden features, including waterfronts, a plant nursery, skating park, nature trail, outdoor library, jogging and cycling tracks, maintenance yard, offices, and a shearer garden. These additions provide diverse leisure and recreational options for park-goers.
The reopening of Uhuru Park signifies a significant milestone in Nairobi’s urban development, underscoring the city’s commitment to accessible green spaces for its residents. With its revitalized infrastructure and amenities, the park is poised to become a dynamic center for recreation, relaxation, and cultural activities, catering to the diverse needs of Nairobi’s populace.
