The Nigerian entertainment industry has plunged into mourning following the sudden loss of veteran Nollywood actor, John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr Ibu.
Famed for his comedic genius and infectious laughter, Mr Ibu passed away after a prolonged battle with illness.
The famed actor faced several health struggles, with treatment involving surgeries leading to the amputation of his leg.
Mr Ibu’s absence from the spotlight in recent years had sparked concerns about his well-being, with widespread rumors about his declining health circulating prior to his passing.
Aside from his health challenges, Mr Ibu had previously raised alarming allegations of being targeted by adversaries within his community.
In 2019, he asserted that his domestic workers were bribed to poison him out of envy for his successful career. Additionally, in May 2022, he claimed to have been poisoned for the third time.
During the course of his treatment, his son and adopted daughter were arrested after stealing funds that had been donated by fans and well-wishers for the actor’s treatment. The two are alleged to have taken “possession of the actor’s phone and hacked into the banking details”, before stealing 55m Naira ($60,700; £47,800).
In an interview with Nigeria local media, Mr Ibu recounted his tumultuous journey, detailing how he fought against the odds with the aid of medical professionals and divine intervention. Despite facing brushes with death and witnessing the malevolent intentions of his enemies, he expressed gratitude for the second chance at life bestowed upon him by God.
Reflecting on his illness, Mr Ibu underscored the profound lessons learned and the unexpected blessings of still being alive.
May his soul rest in peace.
