The government has introduced new regulations mandating the inspection of all school buses before May 1st as part of measures to enhance road safety and curb the alarming rate of accidents.
A joint statement from the Ministries of Transport and Interior, released on Tuesday, outlined the directive for all educational institutions to present their buses for inspection by the specified deadline.
“It will help to assess their mechanical soundness and whether speed limiters installed on them are functional,” the statement highlighted.
Furthermore, the government has also introduced limitations on the operating hours of school buses, which are restricted to between 6 am and 7 pm.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also instructed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to halt the allocation of new routes to public service vehicle (PSV) operators.
This pause aims to facilitate a comprehensive review of all existing routes granted to PSV operators.
Murkomen emphasized that this process would commence once the examination of current routes and operators is completed.
He further stressed the cessation of issuing short-term PSV licenses until a thorough review of all PSV routes is conducted.
